The Top 100 Games to Play Today

This piece provoked a lot of response!

I recently babbled on about why I like Edge magazine so much and I'm back to continue spouting out some more Edge-related dribble. In issue 200, Edge compiled a list that I have been longing for ages. I love lists in general, although I appreciate how silly and arbitrary they can be. It is almost impossible to rank games without wearing those rose-tinted specs and it can be a nightmare trying to jostle between the effect they had on the industry, originality, quality for the time and their current quality. It is useless to deny that some games have aged better than others and I have always wanted someone to produce a list that eliminates most of the confusing aspects that usually come into play when compiling "100 greatest games ever" lists.

This new list is different to the above special edition of Edge, released last year documenting the greatest games of all time, nostalgia and industry impact included

This list, unlike any other solely serves to rank "the 100 best games today." I interpret this as "if you were to introduce someone intelligent and capable to gaming today, which 100 games would you tell them to play." This means that the list doesn't include games like any of the Gran Turismo or Devil May Cry series, two IPs that haven't aged particularly well, and despite initial excitement have failed to remain the definitive series in their respective genres. The list also spans a rather wide range of genres and includes "industry picks" from various industry celebrities. It is supposed to be in order, but I prefer to see the list as the 100 games to play, rather than a strict ranking of the best games. Due to the unique nature of the list, many of the games are fairly new.

Okay, there are quite a few weird ones on there, and there is no Metroid Prime. I'm sure loads of you are offended by other omissions too. I do think however, that if someone played this entire list, they would be comfortable approaching any new game and would have a comprehensive understanding of game genre and gaming as a whole. I find it hugely refreshing to find a list so confidently dismissing nostalgia and favoritism, although the Edge classics do prevail to some extent (their love for Valve and Zelda are clearly as evident as ever). How do you feel about this brave list?
